All Things Bright and Beautiful

Sorry folks!!  Not been able to compose a blog for a couple of weeks now!  Just finished listing stuff on ebay who have charged me a HUGE amount for the privilege of making them money and clearing me some space!  But what can you do???

I have been up to lots!  Besides the usual walks with the creatures great and small, I have been organizing fleeces, cleaning them and of course dying etc.  It has been unseasonally hard to dry anything recently.  I think we are back in the cold wet season as the fields once again are just full of water!  The yarn wont dry and today I have given in to shivering and the fire is now lit waiting for me to arrive back from another wet dog walk and steam dry in front of it!

I have not been very creative because I have been exceedingly disciplined!  I have been making myself try to finish things which have lost their glow for me.  You know when the doubts creep in because you are not sure that this particular thing was a good idea?  I have several GREAT ideas started but am not allowing myself to work them until I have done some of the less inspiring ‘things’.  As a result my house is clean!!  (Well it was until the dogs came in all muddy!!).

BUT I have been successful in charity shops and the like!  i will show you some of my recent bits:

Chock full of Wonderwool

Posted on

I know, I know, I’m massively late in the game to offer my thoughts on Wonderwool, but you know what they say; better late than never!

I managed to take my surprisingly enthusiastic fiancé along this year and we both found it a haven of inspiration, craftsmanship and encouragement. The calibre of stall was high, as it is every year, and it was a treat to show someone who’d never been before the sights and sounds. It also gave me an excuse to try a wealth of cakes that in the past I had somehow always missed. (He had a strawberry tart, I had a delectable brownie).

The wall of colour!

The wall of colour!

It was very hard not to be involved from start to finish this year, and walking away from Mum to go home in the evening was something I found incredibly difficult. It’s funny how much you can get used to a place, to seeing the same people, being in the same spot, watching the same things. Waking up on Sunday in my nice warm bed, knowing that I wouldn’t be greeted by the traders’ warm faces and a hot cup of Welsh coffee was something that I don’t think I’ll be able to cope with next year. I’ll have to get my act together and help out properly.

A busy moment....

A busy moment….

However, we did manage to have a good look around, see old favourites and discover some new ones. I loved having a nose around the new hall, and it’s so nice to see such a range of dynamic stalls.

It encouraged me to pick up my spindle, and almost every evening I’ve been home since, I’ve enjoyed continuing to learn. It’s something I’m looking forward to carrying on with it when it gets too hot to carry on with my chunky jumper. Yes it will get hot, one day soon! I’m holding out hope…

Smelly, Colour and Knitting

What strange unpredictable weather May has brought us.  A little of every season all jumbled up and selected at random.  Regardless, the shearing has started and the sheep are free of their heavy load.  The fleece are being picked over and sorted.  I have a bubbly feeling!  I adore this sorting and selecting and skirting.  Probably i should get out more, but hey ho!  At least I am happy!

I have started THE solution today with 2 of the most gorgeous soft Shetland fleeces ever!  I need the solution is deal with these in a gentle manner, so I start with the finest fleeces.  The solution gets fierce as the summer goes on and often i will have to dilute it if the fleece is fine.  It needs diluting or the fierceness of the mixture can literally eat the fleece.  So here is the start of this years cleaning.  It felt good!

The large blue barrels are employed again!

Does it say something very large about me that I find this exciting?  Just a thought!!!……..

Moving on……. to the weather?  Like the weather I am trying little bits of lots of things in no apparent order.  Inspiration is coming thick and fast and I have started lots of ideas and patterns.

Clocks and Cows and Tweenies

What a gorgeous day today!  Started really well with sun, crisp air and clear light.  Meg and I did a rare thing, we started the day together with the dogs.  We walked around the valley.  What a grand start to the weekend.  Everyday the valley changes.  Last week the intense gaudy yellow of the dandelions fought to dominate the green and certainly intimidated the crowds of gentle yellow cowslips.  Today the clouds of clocks lent a magical mystical dream like feel to the slopes of the valley.

Cowslips grow here every year in abundance.  They are so beautiful.

The wild garlic is out.  Starkly white against intense greens.  Little perfect pure stars lighting up the woodland floor.  A fairy kingdom.

Image

Bluebells in swathes move across the glades scenting the air with their rich heady perfume.  This intense blue vies for attention with the sky through the trees in flower.

And then we had errands to run which we did.  After this we did some shopping (a year since we last did this together!).  We found a few lovely things and then struck gold!  Well blue actually!!

THE PERFECT fabric, curtains in a charity shop.  This fabric has been in my head for some time but had not taken form until I recognized that this was it!!  I have in mind a certain alternative pair of trousers.

Meg draped said fabric in a variety of ways to lend inspiration.
