Christmas Cake Spirits

Today started SO badly.  We have had to cancel our long planned party due to flooding.  Outside our door runs a river where there was a path.  The steps to the barn have now become a water feature and the newly cleaned and decorated space complete with Christmas tree and carpet and sofas is now a paddling pool.  I have to admit to a soggy morning myself.  Looking does not solve anything but I was at a complete loss to know where to start or what to do.

Once we got clearing and cancelling my head became clearer and I started on the list of things to do (this had suddenly become much shorter and much longer).  So the cakes needed icing.  I enlisted ‘help’.  ‘Help’ became competitive and resulted in a very sticky kitchen!!

Three males all concentrating!  I mean how hard can it be???

Recent work

Look at what using my bits turned out to be!

The pattern was found on Ravelry and it by Helene Rush.  It is called Taking Flight.  And this is indeed what it feels like!  I LOVE it!  But now I want to use ALL my bits up to see how the colours work into each other!!

AND NOW FOR THE BIG BIG BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!  This is earth shattering as far as i am concerned!

This has been undone and cried over more times than I care to remember.  BUT I persevered and now its here!!!  Just a few ends to sew in and its really really here!!  I can hold it!  I finished it!  I made this!!!

Amanda Perkins Lorna Doone shawl.  Natural Dye Studio.  Genius!  I used Jamiesons spindrift in different colours for each motif so that I could see where I was (my first attempt went hopelessly wrong cos i got so confused!).  And this worked!

Insignificant news to those of you who find crochet easy but to me this is monumental!  Probably out there with the 2013 achievement lists!  I for one shall be leaving 2013 with a great big silly smile on my face!

There is one more thing which I will write for the record as it made my long hot smelly summer SO worth while!  All the fleece I cleaned via the fermenting method has turned out better than anything I have ever done before.  The fleece is SOFT SOFT SOFT and the yeild was significantly up scouring this way.  So although no one else in the world probably cares much at all, in my life it counts and i am very pleased!!

Advent Sunday

Well, here we are in December and I am sure last time I looked it was September!  Christmas like the inevitable brick wall is just around the corner.  Everyone seems busy getting organized and feeling virtuous.  But I am unvirtuous and disorganized!

HOWEVER………….  We have made the effort………….at someone’s expense………….

This is BERT.  Bert is our ‘ground control’.  Bert is a very opinionated donkey.  Bert yells his constant complainings daily to whoever may be within earshot (which probably includes most of you guys!).  Bert is gorgeous and at times very cuddly (but not often).  He, more than anyone else knows you just can not get the staff these days.  AND simply no one understands.

Bert’s services are called upon twice a year.  Easter and Christmas.  Palm Sunday has him performing in the villages nearby and today he took part in a village nativity as, yep, the donkey!  obviously THE most important part.  His equity card is full and so is his head!

Bert has to mind competition horses as a companion when he is not being dreadfully important doing something else.  He feels neglected and misunderstood.  Poor Bert!

However today Bert is the star of the day and feels that for one day at least he has had the recognition he deserves at last.  No one has told him that tomorrow is Monday.  We lacked courage after he discovered that the holly was plastic.
